The
campaign for globalization and global competitiveness calls
for a more aggressive stance in the market. Exporters and
local producers must endeavor to be competitive in the
international market and one of the strategies to achieve
this is through productivity.
To
address the need of the exporters and local producers in
adopting productivity measures in their respective firms,
the AAPC in coordination with DTI-Albay, has initiated
various productivity programs for exporters, local
manufacturers and other sectors.
Among
the different Productivity Improvement Programs introduced
to the various sectors in the province, the 5S Program is
being adopted by most of the manufacturing firms
specifically the Abaca-based Gifts and Housewares sectors.
5S is applied at the provisional stage of any productivity
improvement program because housekeeping deeply concerns on
the basic element of well organized workplace with respect
to their cleanliness and operating condition as well as
workers' attitude to the work and improvement. Further, 5S
provides the ground or foundation for productivity
technologies. It is the most basic and fundamental approach
for productivity and quality improvement in all types of
business and particularly effective in plants and factories
and it is a very effective and independent approach for
improving productivity in small and medium companies where
human and financial resources are limited.
Presently, there are about 20 G & H manufacturers with a
total of 525 workers who are the recipient and practitioners
of the 5S program.
