ADAPTABILITY OF STINGLESS BEES (TRIGONA BIROI FRIESE) TO  JAPANESE-DESIGN HIVES

DESCRIPTION

The study introduces  the use of hive boxes for the Trigona biroi bee species  to determine its adaptability in different nesting conditions The Japanese-design hive boxes. were used for  temperature adaptability. The study succeeded in keeping the colonies of Trigona biroi in tropical conditions particularly in the province of Albay and Camarines Sur

  • The stingless bees of species Trigona biroi locally abundant in the Bicol region have been cultured in halved coconut shells as traditional method. Introduction of the Japanese-design hive boxes to test the adaptability of the T. biroi  bee species succeeded in keeping T. biroi in tropical conditions
IMPACT/RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM

With the adaptability of the T. biroi bee in  hive box in tropical condition, it could be recommended for use by local beekeepers but with subsequent studies to be carried out on the harvesting of pollen and honey without destroying the brood chamber. Keeping the stingless bees of Bicol could be done using Japanese-design hives, which is recommended to be further tested in glasshouse conditions during the winter season and making use of outer box which is equipped with thermostat. Propolis needs to be harvested regularly to provide more space for the brood chamber. With the abundant supply of the propolis, there is need to  indulge in processing and utilization. These can open doors for potential market of packaged bees.

Studies such as pollination of high value crops and off season crops could be done using the colonies of T. biroi in hive boxes. Studies on its life history and behavior, pest and diseases and reproduction could be done

PERFORMANCE OF QUEEN PINEAPPLE TO FOLIAR APPLICATION OF BORON

DESCRIPTION The study introduces  the application of Boron to Queen pineapple (Anonas comusus) to improve growth, enhance its flowering and improve fruit quality of smooth cayenne pinapple. Improvement of fruit quality is the primary concern of queen pineapple growers.  Profitability depends on producing big and sweet pineapple fruits. Providing the plant with the sufficient supply of macro-elements such as NPK is vital, and also important is the  essential micro elements such as Boron

TECHNOLOGY INTERVENTIONS

Application of Boron by foliar spray have significantly increased weight of queen pineapple fruits in both experiments, the use of 3 to 4 grams per liter of water can increase fruit weight by 22 to 23 percent or 147 to 164 grams per fruit. Highest increase in weight is noted when the application is done during the flowering stage

IMPACT/RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM Sprying of Boron at a rate of 3 g/liter water can result to significant increase in weight, length and diameter of queen pineapple fruits which are very important consideration in the pricing scheme of the product. Slight increase in fruit sugar have also been noted which improves its market acceptability. Boron application will not become an additional burden to the farmers since its cost is minimal and application is not very tedious compared to its benefits of increased tonnage yield, sweeter and more expanded pineapple fruits

DESCRIPTION The project developed mechanization technologies for processing arrowroot and the processing system that will solve the laborious and tedious production of arrowroot starch.

IMPACT/RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM

The development of the technology lead to the production of starch that could be used as a material for different food enterprises. This will also encourage farmers to venture into the production of arrowroot since the  extraction of arrowroot flour  is  easier now through the use of machine  rather than the traditional way of extraction.

The development of by-products and marketing of  these products must be explored. The commercialization of these technologies is recommended.
