CRAB FATTENING

DESCRIPTION

The delivery of technology is aimed to fatten freshly-captured marketable crabs, weighing about 250 grams and above.  The crabs are placed within 10 – 15 days in fattening cages before sold in the market.

  • Increase of income by 75 – 100%.  Freshly-captured crabs are purchased at P100.00 – P150.00 per kilogram.  When fattened, it commands a price of P200.00 – P250.00 per kilogram

  • Regular employment is provided to 10 cooperative members up to present

ABACA PINUKPOK PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

The project purports to produce fabrics from fine textured abaca fibers for use in garments and curtains making and for other important industrial purposes.  It involves the weaving of sorted abaca fibers using a technology developed by the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), called "pinukpok", also known in Bicol as "pinukpok" or "pinulpog". 

Global fashion now requires the use of environment-friendly materials from indigenous and local sources.  Demand is high because of the strong support and promotions of world's top couturiers.

IMPACT/RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM
  • The project has increased the number of handlooms, from five (5) in 1998 to twenty five (25) units in 2003

  • Production level of abaca fibers now ranges from 1,000-2,000 meters per month

  • Income generated is P250,000.00 – P500,000.00 per month

  • Two hundred (200) regular workers are employed with various work categories

IMPACT AND OTHER BENEFITS

This project was implemented in support to the development efforts of LGU–Labo that distributed citronella planting materials to coconut farmers as intercrop.  This project also created additional source of income for marginalized rural folks.  Twenty-four (24) active member-coconut farmers occupying 10.2 hectares now earn an additional income of at least two hundred pesos  (PhP200.00) per month out of selling to the cooperative the air-dried citronella leaves at One Peso (P1.00) per kilo.  On the other hand, the cooperative derives an additional monthly gross income of PhP9,250 from the sales of 18.56 liters at a price of PhP500/liter of pure citronella essential oil.

UPGRADING FURNITURE MANUFACTURING IN CAM. SUR

DESCRIPTION

In an effort to produce quality wood and wood based furniture products competitive with local and foreign markets, the Camarines Sur Furniture Producers Association (CSFPA), through the assistance of DOST, established a Production Center equipped with modern tools and machineries capable of mass production and producing highly competitive products.  This will also serve as  a training center for introduction of new technologies such as solid wood bending, wood treatment and preservation and other related trainings for members of the associations.

IMPACT/RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM

The Center has been operational since February 2000 out of the P1,150,000.00 financial assistance from DOST V through the congressional insertion of the late Cong. Rolando Andaya Sr. A total of 25 modern machineries and equipment were provided.  Mr. Betito, the president of the association was the first to utilized the center transferring all jobs from his original furniture shop to the center.  Since process flow of work were in order and the presence of modern machineries, increase in production by 20% was achieve and production cost in terms of labor were also cut down by 34%. Other members  now avail the center. and a total of  P62,000.00 were remitted to the association's fund as fees using the center.  Strong camaraderie and good working relationship among shop owners was observed.

The project involves the integration of squash noodles technology in the line of products being produced by the company.  Said company is producing different kinds of noodles using Taiwanese technology for two years now.

The implementation of the project of FNRI entitled "Nationwide Technology Transfer and Commercialization of Nutritional Products" was brought to the Bicol region through the inclusion of  highly nutritious  Squash Canton to the product line being produced by Lucky Star Food Products.  Market of said canton is now starting to pick up.
