AGRICULTURE

The region had sufficient rice stock as of the third quarter amounting to 1.6 million bags of rice.  This will last up to 39 days based on the 41,080 bags daily consumption requirement. The third quarter palay procurement generated 72,836 bags of palay valued at P61.9 million. NFA distributed a total of 42,418 bags of well milled rice to retail outlets. The presence of good quality low-priced rice from the private sector and the rice Importation program resulted to the low rice distribution of NFA.

The province of Albay participated in the Agri-Pinoy Rice Program. For the quarter 18,631 metric tons of rice was harvested in 5,129 hectares of irrigated rice lands.  Corn production in the province totalled 6,506 metric tons.

Abaca fiber production increased by 56.17 percent compared to the production during the same quarter of last year. Favorable weather and acceptable prices to buyers and sellers brought renewed interest in abaca production. All abaca-producing provinces in the region posted increments for the period. Catanduanes maintained its spot as the top producer of abaca with 40,961 bales or 85 percent of the total.
