        Baao Church

From various documents, a great portion of which was based on early writings, It is inferred that Baao was separated from Bula much earlier in civil matters than in the religious. The church, under the patronage of St. Bartholomew the Apostle, was constructed in the site where it formerly stood for the second time when still a barrio of Bula in 1664. It was constructed with strong materials but destroyed by a typhoon until 1731 when the town itself was moved to its present site from Binanuaanan and a new church of stone was erected in that year. This church was repaired and painted in 1814. The catholic cemetery which is the only one in existence is located outside the poblacion in a well situated and more elevated ground located in the boundary of Barangay La Medalla and San Antonio. From its founding as a separate parish in 1793 to the present time, Baao has had 62 curates including interim appointees, the one having occupied the position longest being Father Demetrio Martirez who, held the curacy for 29 years from 1941 to 1970. Father Florencio Gonzales, to whom may be attributed at least four important accomplishment, and for which he will be long remembered, and prayed by the faithful: (1) The construction of the church façade, one of the most artistic in Camarines Sur. (2) The construction of the patio which for sheer art is unsurpassed in the whole Bicol region. (3) The founding of the parochial school in 1939, offering primary courses and special courses n Spanish and piano. Eventually the school offered a complete secondary school, the St. Monica Academy. (4) His example of unselfishness and devotion and Saintliness which has inspired the people with affection and trust in their church officials and the practice of Christian virtues, pieties and charities.

In the early morning of September 6, 1971, a great fire destroyed the church of St. Bartholomew and convent and its neighbor, the St. Monica Academy buildings. Rt. Rev.Msgr. Rafael Imperial volunteered to face the challenge of reconstructing the church despite some pressure in so some quarters. With the support of many generous parishioners, the gigantic project was completed inspite of so many contradictions and difficulties. (excerpt from History of the Church of Baao
