Location |
The municipality of Camalig is one of the
municipalities at the province of Albay which belongs to the second
congressional district. It is situated at the southern slope of Mayon Volcano
wherein its boundaries include the municipality of Guinobatan on the west,
Jovellar on the south and by Mayon Volcano on its north portion.
The municipality is about 15 kilometers from
the City of Legazpi, the nearest growth center and 516 kilometers from Metro
Manila.

Land Area |
Camalig occupies a total land area of 13,088
hectares representing 5.12% of the total provincial land area and 0.7% of the
whole Bicol Region.

Land Use |
Out of the 13,088 hectares total land area of
the municipality, 10.18% is categorized as protected land area which are
covered by the Network of Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) Law and or
areas with 50% slope or more than 1,000 meters elevation.
The remaining 89.82% are categorized as the
municipality’s production land, more than half of which are categorized as
NPAAD. The municipality has a total of 10,484.1846 hectares which comprises
the agricultural area with 822 hectares irrigated rice land.

Topography |
The municipality of Camalig is approximately
2,500 feet above sea level and its topography is somewhat mountainous with
scattered plains and valleys. The political boundary of the municipality
actually begins from the volcano center towards the municipality of Jovellar.
At the base of Mayon Volcano, where the plains begins, are rolling hills and
irregular ranges punctuated by streams and rivers. From the northern boundary,
the terrain of Camalig slides down the volcano slope gradually flattening into
the plains of the Poblacion area until it reaches the rolling hills and
mountains along the southern base of a triangle at the volcano base. Aside from
some rivers running through the Poblacion, there are no other bodies of water
which has significant size existing in the municipality.

Climate |
Almost throughout the year, the temperature and
general atmosphere of the municipality is cool and refreshing due to its
attitude. The combined elements of its topography and streams produces two
types of climate namely: Type II and Type IV. At Type II climate there is no
pronounced dry season but has pronounced maximum rain period from November to
January. Type IV climate covers the southern part of Albay wherein these
receive more or less even rainfall distribution throughout the year. |

Soil Classification |
Thee soil of Camalig ranges from clay to
gravely loam. The Bureau of Soils classified it as (a) Mayon gravely sandy
loam, (b) Legazpi fire sandy loam, (c) Mauraro gravely sandy loam and (d) clay
loam. Mayon gravely sandy loam and Mauraro gravely sandy loam are
characterized as steep, well-drained, vvery strong sloping and underrate deep
with fine soil which are then ideally suited for pasture activities. However,
cultivation of these may result to severe erosion if not properly managed. For
Legazpi fine sandy loam type of soil, upland field crops are recommended to
attain its maximum potential.

Population |
The Municipality of Camalig has 50 barangays
with a total population of 58,141. The most populated of
these barangays are Baligang, Libod, Ilawod, Cotmon, and Tagaytay while the
least is Barangay Mabunga. The average household size 6 which approximates the
national standard of 6 person per household.
The municipality’s population continued to
grow since 1970 at an average of 91% annually attaining its highest in 2001
when the total population reached to 58,141. this average annual increase is
quiet lesser than the provincial and regional averages of 1.7% and 1.5%
respectively.
By the year 2003, the total population of the
municipality is projected at 58,874 wherein the population of Barangay Baligang
is expected to be the highest and Barangay Mabunga to be the least populated.
By the year 2010, the municipality’s population
is targeted at 64,237. As of May 14, 2001 elections, the Municipality of
Camalig has a total voting population of 27,221 with 175 total precincts
clustered into 142 precincts.

With the increasing population of the
municipality which is 91% per annum, the annual population will definitely
increase. For censal year 2001, the population density is 444 persons per
square kilometer. The most densely populated barangays include Ilawod,
Cabangan, Baligang and Libod. This increasing population density could be
attributed to the increasing economic activities in the municipality brought
about by the employment opportunities at Mayon Cement Plant-Goodfound Cement
Corporation, the pioneer cement factory at the Bicol Region. |

Financial Institutions |
The municipality has one (1) rural bank and two
(2) cooperative banks which cater loan services to Camaliguenos particularly
to the farmer’s production loans. There are also 14 cooperatives existing in
the different barangays which pursue poverty alleviation programs in the areas
of community organizing, livelihood assistance wherein it could fund or give
grants, implement programs and projects or simply provide resources to
individual or a specified group. Further, these cooperatives are simply
organized to undertake small relending and other marketing and consumer
operations. |

Infrastructure and Utilities |

Road Network |
The municipality’s road network has a total
length of 112.60 kilometers which is categorized into national, provincial,
municipal and barangay road. Camalig has 9 kilometers national road which is an
asphalt road. There are 11 major routes of the provincial road in the
municipality with a total length of 48.9 kilometers, hoever, these road in many
cases are made of gravel in poor condition. The total length of municipal roads
at this municipality is 4.2 kilometers wherein almost all of these roads are
asphalt or concrete paved and well-maintained. There are 21 routes of barangay
roads in the municipality with a total length of 50.5 kilometer. Some of these
barangay roads are earth-filled wherein they are in poor conditions. |

Communication
Facilities |
The municipality has existing two
telecommunication companies namely Digitel and Bayantel providing local,
national and international direct distance dialing services. Different phone
cards booth are installed at some areas in the Poblacion. The cable TV and fax
services are being operated by the Manila Cable and Bayantel Company,
respectively. Governmennt-owned telegraph network and postal services are
available at the municipality. |

Power and Electricity |
ALECO II is the only electric cooperatives
which distributes and supplies the electric power requirements of the
municipality. This cooperative energizes more or less 47 barangays out of the
50 barangays in the municipality of Camalig. |
