Geography & Demography
Location

Lies approximately 123 0 44' longitude (east) and 13 0 08' latitude (north). Situated on the eastern portion of Albay province, approximately 556  kilometers south of Metro Manila. It is likewise centrally located in the Bicol Region and is accessible by all modes of transportation (land, air and water).

Boundaries:

  • North - Sto. Domingo, Albay

  • East - Albay Gulf

  • West - Daraga, Albay

  • South - Manito, Albay; Pilar and Castilla, Sorsogon

Land Area 20, 240.40 hectares of land tract subdivided into:
  • Urban area (41 barangays) - 1,382.60 hectares.
  • North area (13 barangays) - 3,772.30 hectares.
  • South area (11 barangays) - 6,340.97 hectares.
  • Southeast  (5 barangays) - 8,066.69 hectares
  • National Parks  - 857.9 hectares (inclusive of 857.9 hectares Mayon Volcano permanent danger zone)

Topography Generally plain on the northeastern side with slope ranging from 5 to about 15 degrees while dominantly rolling to hilly on the southern part. Coastal areas vary from plain (northern portion) to hilly terrain (southern portion)
Climate Average temperature of 27 0 C; coldest during the month of December at 25 0 C and the warmest during the month of June at 28 0 C
Wind Direction Prevailing wind direction is the northeasterly wind which comes during the months of January to April, with slight variation, east northeasterly, in May. Wind direction shifts from the southeast beginning the month of June up to October. During the months of November and December, winds from the northeast again prevail, bringing in the cool breeze from the western hemisphere

Mineral Resources
  1. Mining Deposits

Minerals with abundant deposit in the city are perlite and bentonite. White clay is also available but, not large enough to attract the conduct of mining activity.

  1. Mining Claims

There are seven (7) individuals/companies operating mining activities in the city. Four of these are extracting perlite deposits while the three are extracting bentonite deposits. Also, two are with the Mining Lease Contracts, while the rest are with Small Scale Mining Permits. all granted by DENR

  1. Mineral Production

Presently only the Asaphil Construction and Development Corporation (ACDC) is actively undertaking mining activity. As of end of 1995, it has extracted some 17,133 MT of perlite.

Infrastructure and Utilities
Airport The Legazpi Airport, operated and administered by the Air Transportation Office (ATO) is the only commercially operated airport in the City and classified as a trunk line. It has a total area of 75 hectares and a concrete runway of 1,974 meters. It has to date modern equipment and facilities, including a control tower with complete and updated gadgets and accessories needed for its operation. At present the airport can accommodate passenger medium range jet planes and lighter planes for commercial, military and cargo operations.  
Seaport One major facility that plays a vital role in the economic development activity is the Legazpi City Port/Wharf. The port is classified as a national sub-port of entry. It has an approach length and width of 329 meters and 12 meters. Total area is 4,942 square meters with an open storage space of 1,738 meters. 

There are 4 other ports in Legazpi City, namely: Dapdap Port classified as municipal port and the Bagacay Fishing Port; 2 private ports, one in Bigaa services the Co Say Co. and another one located at Arimbay services the Legazpi Oil Company.        

Road Network Total road network as of 1995 is 180.255 kms..

Power and Electricity Power is provided by the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) and distributed for local consumption (residential, commercial, industrial and other uses by the Albay Electric Cooperative (ALECO).

Water Resources The Legazpi City Water District is the main supplier of water for residential, commercial and industrial uses. It services at present the entire urban area and some rural barangays like Bigaa, Arimbay, Buraguis, Dap-dap and portion of Taysan.

Sources of water of the waterworks system are the barangays of Bonga and Mabinit wells, Buyuan springs abd PBN, Banadero and DENR pumpng stations. The existing sources produces a combined capacity of 857,377,022 gallons per annum.

Of household connections, as of end of 1995, a total of 6,225 households have connections, 5,345  are residential, 678 commercial and 2 industrial.
