LINDGC is dominated by the Bicol, River Basin, whose flood plain of
some 800 sq. kms. is one of the major rice bowls of the country. Aside
from the broad alluvial plains of the Bicol River, other landforms
include coastal plains and wetlands, foothills and mountains, and
volcanic cones. The soils that are either deltaic deposits or volcanic
in origin are generally fertile and suited for a wide range of
agricultural crops. Other land resources are its extensive mineral
deposits, both valuable metals (gold, copper, silver, etc.) and
non-metallic (limestone/marble, guano, cement raw materials, ceramic
clay, etc.)
Most of the areas belong to Type IV climate, characterized by even
rainfall throughout the year. Temperature is generally cool and wind
velocity averages at 8 knots. The area is located on the typhoon belt
and experiences this hazard at the average of two major typhoons per
year. Typhoons accompanied by heavy rainfall usually create massive
flooding of the central plains of the Bicol River. Areas most affected
are the vicinity of Naga City, Baao, and Polangui-Oas area.
Vegetative cover of the
corridor's land areas includes public forest and national parks,
pastures and grasslands and agricultural croplands. Significant
portions of the forestlands are degraded due to over logging and
conversion to agricultural uses. Other natural resources, which have
been reduced and continue to be a risk of diminution, are the mangroves
and coastal resources, many of which have lost their productive natural
state due to siltation or conversion to other uses.
